If you are bulimic, your abnormal eating habits can cause harm to your digestive system and cause you to develop acid reflux symptoms. You have a bulimia eating disorder when you engage in an episode of binge eating and then purge either through vomiting or taking laxatives to avoid gaining weight. During the binge eating, you are unable to stop yourself from eating and often stuff yourself until your stomach is way beyond being full.

There are several reasons why you would engage in this type of psychological behavior. You basically have a lack of self- esteem and confidence in yourself to begin with. Interestingly, you may even not be actually overweight but still insist that you are, and thus becoming bulimic.

Vomiting after eating does not only remove food from the stomach but also the acid produced by the stomach. Stomach acid is meant to break down the food so that the food will be fully digested. As you vomit, the acid is forced through the esophagus. If you vomit once or twice a day, the acid will start to wear down the esophagus. Your esophagus will become itchy and stinging. You start to experience acid reflux symptoms and also GERD. Eventually, you will no longer be able to swallow the food properly.

Bulimia in the long run can damage your esophagus. Similar to acid reflux, it can ruin the lining of the stomach and eventually cause other undesirable consequences. These consequences can result in death. Indeed, people have died because of bulimia and its many side effects. This is due to the fact that if you do not treat bulimia, then you do not get sufficient nutrition from the food that you are eating. It is possible to damage your body to the extent of being irreversible for the rest of your life. Sadly, many do not seek treatment until it is too late.

The only way to overcome bulimia and thus get relief from your acid reflux symptoms is getting to an appropriate treatment program. Usually such programs would involve some counscelling, which can help you change to a more positive outlook in life. You also need to realize that you are hurting your body if you are bulimic.

Sadly, even though you may recover from bulimia, various effects may still exist. You may still continue to experience acid reflux symptoms because your body is used to vomiting and damage has already been done internally. Medication may be needed to help keep the acid from returning to the esophagus and causing more harm. The said medication will eventually help reduce your acid reflux symptoms. You will also need to make major changes to your eating and lifestyle habits, to keep your acid reflux symptoms under control and lead a healthy normal life.
